As autumn paints the world in hues of cranberry, gold, and bronze, many of us feel the desire to infuse our homes with the comfort of these inviting seasonal scents.
Traditionally, candles and plug-in air fresheners have been popular choices, mainly because people have emotional ties to certain scents. A scent is directly related to the part of the brain that holds our emotions.
Fall Scents are associated with happy memories and instantly evoke emotions, triggering feelings of happiness.
However, mounting evidence suggests that these aren’t the healthiest options.
The Hidden Dangers of Candles and Plug-ins
Research from South Carolina State University has found that burning paraffin candles releases harmful chemicals, such as toluene and benzene, which are linked to respiratory issues and even cancer. Similarly, a study at the University of York identified thousands of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from plug-in air fresheners, some of which may cause respiratory irritation or trigger allergies.
These lovely-smelling seasonal aromas are known as endocrine disruptors (aka hormone havoc), as the University of Maryland concluded. They reported that synthetic fragrance chemicals can cause reproductive abnormalities, decreased production of testosterone in males, reduced fertility in men and women, premature labor, and endometriosis.
Further studies in March of 2021 showed that “air fresheners caused and aggravated liver damage.” This would be because everything is processed through the liver.
BUT WAIT, there’s more. The study also found that inhalation of air freshener induced insulin resistance in the study group, leading to increased HbA1c levels, a precursor to Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
A Healthier Alternative: Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils
It is no secret that I have multiple diffusers going all hours of the day! One of the best things about therapeutic-grade essential oils is that they not only smell incredible, but they also have an incredibly positive impact on our health.
We can select oils for specific purposes to support immunity, our respiratory systems, healthy sleep, focus and mental clarity, emotional support, and more. We can fill our homes with the scents of the season without burning chemicals or using ingredients that harm our health.
And the rulers brought… spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense. Exodus 35:28
Creating Fall Scents with Essential Oils
To capture the ambiance of fall, consider using essential oils that capture the essence of the season. Here are some of my favorites:
- Cinnamon Bark: Known for its warm and spicy aroma, it's perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere.
- Clove: This oil has a rich, spicy scent that complements fall festivities.
- Ginger: Its invigorating aroma can create a refreshing yet comforting environment.
- Nutmeg: With its sweet, nutty fragrance, nutmeg is perfect for evoking the spirit of fall.
- Orange: Offers a refreshing, citrusy note that pairs well with other fall scents.
By blending a combination of these oils in a diffuser, you can naturally infuse your home with plant fragrances that celebrate the season without compromising your health.
As we transition into fall, let’s be mindful of our health and well-being by choosing natural methods that promote a wholesome environment, as God intended. Essential oils not only protect us from harmful chemicals but also enrich our homes with soul-soothing aromas.
