Before You Dive In: Natural Ways to Shield Your Body from Chlorine

Before You Dive In: Natural Ways to Shield Your Body from Chlorine
Swimming pools are a huge summer pastime meant for fun in the sun, laughter, and memories to last a lifetime. While they are appealing to admire in a beautifully landscaped yard or at a resort, chlorine pools pose health hazards.

Liquid pool chlorine is made from sodium hypochlorite, the active ingredient in household bleach, but it has a higher concentration (10%-12.5%). While chlorine helps keep pools free of bacteria, it negatively affects human cells. Our skin is our largest organ, and what it absorbs enters the bloodstream and then travels throughout the body, where the liver and kidneys process it.

Double trouble comes when your body is already overloaded with toxins, and your detox pathways are clogged. A chlorinated pool may be more than you can handle.

Others don't need to fear the pool. You just need the knowledge to be a good steward of your body before and after exposure to chlorine, so here are safe, natural solutions for handling it.

Understanding Chlorine Symptoms
After long days at the pool, we’ve always assumed these symptoms were “normal” fun in the sun pool day symptoms. But it turns out these are chlorine reactions, with the last half being chlorine poisoning. Here's what you should watch for:

  • Chlorine leaves skin feeling dry and itchy, or eczema flares
  • Hair may feel drier, rougher, and even discolored
  • The eyes are red and itchy
  • Respiratory issues like coughing, congestion, and asthma
  • Disrupted sleep, irritability, headaches, and fatigue
  • Fever, diarrhea, and vomiting
The goal isn't to avoid chlorinated pools completely, but to know your physical limits and support your body before and after swimming.

Before the Pool: Proactive Support
Simple, consistent support like rinsing before and after, using a vitamin C spray, moisturizing, and replenishing minerals and nutrients makes all the difference.

DIY Vitamin C Pre-Pool Spray
Vitamin C helps neutralize chlorine's smell and feel on contact while offering antioxidant support for your skin. It's simple to make:

1 cup filtered water
1 teaspoon powdered vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
3–5 drops Lavender or Frankincense essential oil

Mix the vitamin C powder into water until fully dissolved, then pour it into a small glass spray bottle. Shake gently before each use, then spray lightly over exposed skin before getting in the pool. Let it air dry for a minute or two. Reapply after swimming if you'd like, right before rinsing off. Bonus: it also helps reduce that strong chlorine smell on skin and hair.

Simple Barrier Support Tips
These small habits make a real difference:

  • Rinse off before entering the pool. Wet skin absorbs less pool water because it's already saturated.
  • Apply a light, natural oil barrier. A thin layer of coconut oil or a gentle body oil can reduce direct skin contact with chlorinated water.
  • Wear a swim cap or braid your hair lightly coated with oil. Hair is especially absorbent – this helps reduce dryness and buildup.
  • Hydrate well before and after swimming. Internal hydration supports everything your body does externally.
After the Pool: Restore and Replenish
This is where the real care happens, simple nourishment and recovery.
Post-Pool Mineral Bath
A warm bath helps your body relax while supporting skin and mineral balance:
1–2 cups magnesium flakes
½ cup bentonite clay
5–10 drops Frankincense essential oil

Add the essential oil to the magnesium flakes in a bowl of water, then dissolve the magnesium and bentonite clay in the water for your bath before adding the mixture. Soak for 15–20 minutes. (Note: Make sure the bentonite clay is fully mixed before you get into it to avoid clumping.) The clay acts as a binder and helps pull out the chlorine.

Internal Support: Gentle Cellular Nourishment

After swimming, your body appreciates antioxidant and nutrient support:
Super C Chewable – supports antioxidant status and general immune health
NingXia Red - works as a daily antioxidant drink to support overall cellular wellness. It provides naturally occurring antioxidants that help your body manage environmental stressors. These are great to freeze and eat as a popsicle.

The Bottom Line: Health is About Resilience, Not Avoidance
Think of these solutions less as "detox tools" and more as cellular nourishment in response to environmental exposure. We can’t eliminate every exposure, but we can build resilience in real life.

So go swim. Be in the sun. Laugh loudly. And then come home and give your body a little extra love.

Hello, I'm Dana!

If I had known the truth about the toxic carcinogens lurking in the foods, cleaning products, personal care items, and laundry products I was buying, I would have done more to preserve my health! Like most Americans, I had NO CLUE; there were toxins in them that were DESTROYING my body.

Since 2013, when my journey back to wellness began, I have spent loads of money (because insurance doesn't cover WELL care) and hours learning what the root cause of my chronic pain, fatigue, dense brain fog, and lethargy was.

After four years of researching and experimenting with different so-called "natural or green" products, and re-learning how to shop, read labels, cook, and clean, my struggle to find safe, plant-based products was complete. I easily began transforming my home into a safe environment that no longer created health problems. I have now replaced all of my medications with plant-based foods and products that work wonderfully without the side effects!!

Are you struggling to find real relief for your symptoms, too? Do you desire to see the health God designed you to have? Would you enjoy a community of wellness-seeking people to help educate you, share experiences, and offer some great tips?

I'm confident this is what you're searching for, too. Let me invite you to join my educational group, Biblical Health for Christ-Centered Homemakers. Want to chat more about your journey to wellness and how you can help your family, too? Click below to contact me now!
