Blocking the Sun Could Be Hindering Your Health

Blocking the Sun Could Be Hindering Your Health
If you are like most of the busy middle-aged Christian homemakers I speak with every week, you probably have a pair of sunglasses sitting in your purse, in your car console, or perched on top of your head right now. They are an everyday summertime accessory. We grab them on our way out the door to run errands, head to church, or drop the kids off at their various activities. But have you ever stopped to wonder if wearing them too often might actually be hindering your health?

It might sound like a strange question. After all, we have been told for years to protect our eyes from the sun. But as we seek to be good stewards of our bodies and rely on the natural methods God designed, we have to look closely at how our everyday habits affect our overall wellness. So many of us are struggling with deep fatigue, frustrating brain fog, chronic pain, and sleeplessness. You pour your heart into your family and your ministry responsibilities, often leaving very little time for your own care. But what IF one of the missing pieces to your health puzzle is as simple as letting the light in?

Sunlight Communicates With the Body
In Ecclesiastes 11:7, Solomon writes, “Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.” God created the sun not just to warm the earth and grow our food, but to actively communicate with our bodies. When we constantly block that light with dark lenses, we might inadvertently be blocking one of His most powerful tools for our daily renewal.

To understand how this works, we need to marvel at the way God designed the human body. Your eyes are not just for seeing the beautiful world around you; they are also sophisticated sensors that tell your brain what time of day it is. When natural sunlight enters your eyes, it sends a direct signal to the hypothalamus, a part of your brain called which controls your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is essentially your body's internal 24-hour clock. It dictates when you feel awake and alert, and when you feel tired and ready for rest.

When we immediately put on sunglasses before stepping outside, we filter out the specific wavelengths of light that signal to our brain that the day has begun. This causes a delay in our biological clock. If you are struggling with low energy or brain fog that makes it hard to focus on your daily Bible reading or manage your household duties, this lack of morning light could be a major culprit. Without that clear signal from the sun, your body remains in a sluggish, semi-awake state.

Sunlight Boosts Hormones
But the impact goes even deeper than daytime fatigue. The light entering your eyes directly influences your hormone production, specifically serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is often called the happy hormone. It is crucial for stress relief, mood regulation, and mental clarity. Natural sunlight boosts your serotonin levels, giving you the natural energy and emotional stability you need to handle the demands of your busy life.

Here is the truly amazing part of God's design: the serotonin your body produces during the day is converted into melatonin at night. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for deep, restorative sleep. If you are tossing and turning at night, battling sleeplessness, it might be because you did not get enough unfiltered sunlight in your eyes during the day to produce the necessary melatonin for the evening. By wearing sunglasses too often, you are disrupting this delicate, God-given cycle.

Sunlight Signals the UV Filter
Inside your retinas are special light-detecting cells that act like messengers. When sunlight hits those cells, they send a signal to the brain. That signal helps trigger the release of hormones, which tell your skin’s pigment-producing cells to start making the body’s UV filter, melanin.

Melanin is one of the ways your body helps protect your skin while in the sun. It is your body’s adaptive response, an attempt to prepare, protect, and respond to the light it’s receiving. Your body was designed to recognize that sunlight is present and get ready for it.

Signs You Need Sunglasses
So, are sunglasses hazardous to your health? The answer is that they can be, if they are overused. There is certainly a time and a place for them. If you are driving directly into a glaring sunset, spending hours on the bright water. Dealing with medical conditions that require eye protection, and conditions like low thyroid production that cause light sensitivity, makes sunglasses a helpful tool. The hazard lies in our modern habit of wearing them constantly, out of mere convenience, habit, or fashion, whenever we step outside. We are inadvertently starving our eyes of the light they desperately need to function properly.

As part of your health stewardship, I want to encourage you to be intentional about your light exposure. This is about building a strong foundation for your health legacy. You want to be vibrant, clear-headed, and energized so you can continue to serve the Lord, your family, and your community with joy and vitality for years to come.

Start Your Day With Sunshine
Here is a simple, beginner-friendly way to start incorporating this knowledge into your daily routine. Tomorrow morning, try stepping outside within the first hour of waking up. Leave your sunglasses inside. Spend ten to fifteen minutes simply soaking in the morning light. You do not need to stare directly at the sun, of course; simply looking at the sky, reading your Bible on the porch, or taking a short prayer walk will let enough light into your eyes to make a wonderful difference.

Make this a non-negotiable part of your morning health care routine. Use this time to connect with the Lord, breathe in the fresh air, and let His sweet light signal your brain that a new day has begun. As the day progresses, try to take short breaks outside without your sunglasses. If you are running errands, walk from your car to the store without them. Let your eyes adapt to the natural brightness of the day.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by stress or bogged down by midday brain fog, step outside for five minutes of unfiltered daylight. You will be amazed at how this simple act of stress relief can clear your mind and lift your spirits. By practicing habits with God's design, you are taking a powerful step toward reclaiming your health and overcoming the fatigue and sleeplessness that have been holding you back.

Remember, being a good steward of your body means looking at the big picture of how you live each day. It is about making small, intentional choices that honor the way you were intricately and wonderfully made. Letting the sun shine into your eyes is a beautiful, natural way to support your God-given vitality.

Hello, I'm Dana!

If I had known the truth about the toxic carcinogens lurking in the foods, cleaning products, personal care items, and laundry products I was buying, I would have done more to preserve my health! Like most Americans, I had NO CLUE; there were toxins in them that were DESTROYING my body.

Since 2013, when my journey back to wellness began, I have spent loads of money (because insurance doesn't cover WELL care) and hours learning what the root cause of my chronic pain, fatigue, dense brain fog, and lethargy was.

After four years of researching and experimenting with different so-called "natural or green" products, and re-learning how to shop, read labels, cook, and clean, my struggle to find safe, plant-based products was complete. I easily began transforming my home into a safe environment that no longer created health problems. I have now replaced all of my medications with plant-based foods and products that work wonderfully without the side effects!!
