Many women graciously spend their lives caring for others, children, grandchildren, aging parents, and spouses, yet rarely pause to consider how their own long-term health affects the people they love the most. What kind of legacy are you leaving your family?
“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children.” Proverbs 13:22
While we often think of an inheritance as finances, it also means wisdom, emotional stability, and spiritual heritage. But do we consider the health stewardship we are leaving them? Health is wealth!
Breaking Cycles of Disease
We’ve been told for decades that heart disease, diabetes, emotional eating, exhaustion, and inflammation are hereditary, leaving our children to feel doomed and hopeless, with a sentence to suffer from the same health conditions we have given them.
In reality, they have inherited our bad habits, lack of knowledge, and lifestyle choices that caused our diseases.
The good news is that disease cycles can be broken through knowledge, discipline, and renewed thinking anchored in God’s truth. God promised good health to the Jewish people in return for their obedience in Exodus 15:26, and part of that obedience was to their dietary laws.
God Wrote the Best Diet Plan
You've probably heard people claim Christians aren’t under the law, so that diet doesn’t apply to us, but why is it we (meaning faithful Christians) will try every new diet book man can write and ignore the one God gave to his chosen people? I was so convicted when I was presented with this thought.
How do you feel when you’ve prepared a delicious home-cooked meal, and your family picks at it and wants a frozen pizza? Rejection is real, and I can’t help but imagine God shaking his head in frustration when we come to him, praying for healing from our health issues, thinking, "If you would just follow the plan."
Consider Daniel, when he was taken captive, how he purposed in his heart not to defile himself with the King’s meat. I applaud his parents for training him not only in obedience but also in the importance of God’s dietary instructions and the consequences of the world’s food.
“...I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:...” Deuteronomy 30:19
Simple choices like eating less boxed foods and more fresh vegetables, replacing refined sugar with fruit, walking, and managing stress become seeds of blessing for future generations.
Ask the Lord for a desire to steward your health with wisdom, so you may break the destructive habits and help build a legacy of health and vitality for your family.
