Knowledge separates the facts from myths about health, and the fact is, your body cannot live without sodium. God designed sodium to be an essential mineral that the body needs in order to function properly.
Sodium helps regulate fluid balance, supports healthy nerve signaling, allows muscles to contract properly, and helps your cells absorb important nutrients. Even your heart depends on the right sodium balance to beat as it should. Without enough sodium, the body simply does not function the way it was created to.
Myth: Sodium is Bad for you and Hardens Arteries
One of the biggest myths in heart health conversations is that sodium itself is the problem. In reality, the issue is often not sodium alone, but the form it comes in and the kind of foods it is attached to.
The Fact Is: Many studies linking sodium to health concerns focus on the standard American diet, which is high in heavily processed foods. These foods often contain sodium chloride, which consists of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. A lab-created salt that God never intended us to eat. There is an important distinction between the mineral sodium and sodium chloride.
Processed foods are one of the biggest reasons people become confused about sodium. It is not uncommon for someone to consume large amounts of sodium from canned soups, frozen dinners, deli meats, chips, sauces, fast food, and packaged snacks while remaining undernourished at the cellular level.
These products are often stripped of natural balance and loaded with ingredients that place extra stress on the body. The problem is not simply “too much sodium.” The larger issue is that processed foods deliver sodium in an unhealthy context, along with chemical additives and nutrient-deficient calories.
Myth: Reduce Sodium to Lower Blood Pressure or Reduce Swelling
Another myth is that if you want to lower blood pressure or reduce swelling, you should remove sodium as much as possible. For most people, excluding certain medical conditions such as organ failure, the body needs balance rather than extremes.
The Fact Is: Sodium works together with hydration and other minerals to help maintain proper fluid levels. When that balance is disrupted, the cells begin to hold water.
Low sodium can lead to symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, brain fog, muscle cramps, confusion, and, in more severe cases, fainting. Some people may also notice poor stamina, irritability, or a general feeling that they just do not feel well. These signs should not be ignored. They can be indications that the body is lacking what it needs to maintain proper function.
This is why wisdom matters. The goal is not to fear sodium but to understand it. A healthier approach is often to eliminate the heavily processed foods that contain excessive amounts of lab-created sodium, refined oils, added refined sugars, preservatives, and little to no nutritional value.
Instead, choose more nourishing, whole foods prepared at home. That gives you greater control over what you are eating and supports better health stewardship.
As with many areas of wellness, balance is wiser than extremes. Caring for our bodies is not about fearing salt. It is about learning how God designed the body to function and making thoughtful choices that honor His creation. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
The most helpful resource I have found in understanding how the body functions and the nutrition required to support it is the book Nutrition: 101 Choose Life. Definitely, a must have for the Christian home.
