Have you ever joked about how our health seems to take a nosedive after 40? Or perhaps you've found some humor in those menopause memes? While these jokes can be relatable, they often hint at an important truth: the health changes we experience in our 40s and beyond are not just inevitable parts of aging but also a reflection of years living the Standard American Lifestyle.
As I journeyed through my 40s and experienced my own health challenges, I now realize that many symptoms of menopause are actually inflammatory responses to lifestyle choices colliding with the end of our fertility years. Now, as I guide other women through their menopause journeys, it's evident that understanding how crucial healthy lifestyle choices are.
Perimenopause is the transitional phase that typically occurs in a woman’s late thirties to early fifties, and lasts an average of seven years. During this time, shifts in estrogen and progesterone production can lead to symptoms like:
- Mood swings
- Irregular cycles
- Sleep disturbances
- Changes in libido
- Headaches
- Tummy weight gain
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
These symptoms may appear to be an inevitable part of menopause, but I’ve got good news!
The key to gracefully transitioning through midlife lies in adopting healthy lifestyle choices in (or preferably before) your midlife years. Interestingly, women in other countries often experience fewer menopausal symptoms. This difference points to the impact of lifestyle choices on our health before menopause.
Additionally, unmanaged symptoms can strain the relationships with those closest to us, making this transition even more challenging. It's an interesting observation that divorce rates peak among couples in their 40s and 50s, right in the heat of midlife symptoms.
Proverbs 21:9 says, "It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house." I can’t help but wonder if the couple in this verse were in this season of life, but it reminds us of the importance of understanding and addressing our health and emotional well-being.
I can't help but wonder if this couple was in their midlife, having some transitional issues, but it reminds me of the importance of addressing our health and emotional well-being for the sake of our relationships and our testimony for Christ.
By embracing the foundations of health God established for us, we can support our body's natural processes and cultivate a more peaceful and fulfilling midlife.
