Do you remember when the TV stations used to go off the air at night? After the 10 o’clock news, everything just… stopped. The screen went dark, signaling the end of the day, and people went to bed.
Now here we are in a world filled with technology, endless entertainment, and constant connection, and somehow, we are more tired than ever.
We stay up later. We push through fatigue. We try to squeeze just a little more out of the day. And yet, so many women are waking up exhausted.
Why is that?
Sleep is God's Plan for Restoration
Psalm 127:2 reminds us,
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late… for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”
Sleep is not an inconvenience. It is not laziness. It is not wasted time. It is a gift. In fact, I refer to sleep as the 7th foundation of health, because without it, every other area of health begins to suffer.
God, in His wisdom, designed our bodies with a cycle: Day for activity. Night for restoration. When we honor that cycle, the body functions the way it was created to. When we ignore it, we begin to feel the consequences.
The Real Cost of Poor Sleep
You may already be experiencing the effects of poor sleep.
Maybe your mind feels foggy, and it’s harder to concentrate. Maybe your patience is thinner than it used to be. Maybe your body feels inflamed, fatigued, or just “off.” Sleep affects far more than just how rested you feel in the morning.
A lack of sleep can impact:
- Cognitive function — focus, memory, and decision-making
- Hormones — including those that regulate stress, hunger, and metabolism
- Weight and cravings — making healthy choices feel harder
- Mental health — increasing anxiety and emotional overwhelm
- Immune function — making it harder to fight off illness
Over time, chronic sleep deprivation has even been linked to serious conditions like Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
This isn’t just about feeling tired. This is about how well your body can function, heal, and sustain you over time.
Sleep Affects Your Calling
This is something we don’t always talk about. But it matters. When you are exhausted, everything feels harder. You’re more easily overwhelmed.
More reactive; Less patient.
It becomes more difficult to think clearly, respond gently, and carry out the responsibilities God has given you.
Sleep doesn’t just affect your body. It affects how you live. And ultimately, it affects how you serve.
Why the Body Needs Sleep
Sleep is just as essential as food, water, and air. It is built into your body's design as a time for repair, restoration, and renewal. While you are sleeping, your body is not shutting down; it is actively repairing tissues, balancing hormones, and strengthening your immune system.
Think about when God put Adam into a deep sleep before creating Eve. Even in Scripture, we see that God used sleep as a time for something significant to take place.
We Weren’t Designed to Push Through
Many women have been conditioned to ignore their need for rest. We keep going. We keep serving. We keep pushing through. And while that may feel productive in the moment, it comes at a cost.
The body will always try to survive. You may still get through your to-do list. You may still meet your responsibilities. But healing… slows down. Restoration… becomes incomplete.
It’s like driving on tires that have never been rotated or balanced. They will still get you where you’re going. But the ride is rougher, and they wear out much faster.
A Matter of Stewardship
As Christian women, we often think of stewardship in terms of time, money, and responsibilities. But stewardship also includes the body God has entrusted to us. Your body is not something you can replace. It is His creation. And caring for it is part of honoring Him.
Sleep is one of the most important yet the most overlooked ways we can do that.
A Gentle Invitation
If you have been living in a constant state of fatigue…If sleep has felt inconsistent, restless, or out of reach…This is not something to ignore.
Your body may be trying to tell you that something is out of balance.
And the good news is, there is a path back. When we begin to understand why God designed sleep, we can start working with our bodies rather than against them.
Sometimes, in our effort to do more, we miss one of the most important instructions we’ve been given. Rest. Sleep is not weakness. It is not unproductive. It is part of God’s design for healing.
And sometimes the most faithful thing you can do…is lie down in peace…and sleep.
