Why Having a Purpose is Essential to Your Health
Have you ever had a day where you didn’t have to do anything… and yet, by the end of the day, you felt more tired than refreshed? Not physically exhausted, but mentally foggy, unmotivated, maybe even a little discouraged?
It seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? We often think that if we could just do less, rest more, and remove responsibilities, we would finally feel better.

But what if part of our fatigue isn’t coming from doing too much, but from losing connection to our purpose?

In Genesis 2:15, I saw something powerful:
“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden
to dress it and to keep it.”
Adam and Eve weren’t lying in hammocks all day, napping and reading a good book. God gave Adam a responsibility to cultivate, tend, and to care for his environment.

This tells us something important: besides the physical work which the body needs, there was another part to their well-being, a purpose.

And here's the health connection we can't ignore: this mental and emotional struggle of not fulfilling our purpose affects our bodies, amplifying fatigue that rest can't touch, brain fog that scatters our thoughts, chronic pain that flares without reason, and sleepless nights where worries replay on loop.

Without a purpose, self-care feels pointless, and our health stewardship, caring for the body God entrusted to us, fades into the background.

What Does “To Dress It and Keep It” Mean?
The phrase “to dress it and keep it” means more than just maintaining something.
It involves our creative passion:
  • cultivating growth
  • bringing order
  • creating beauty
  • improving what has been given
This kind of work is deeply satisfying and reflects the nature of God himself: a creator, a builder, and a sustainer.
When we live in that pattern, something inside of us comes alive. When we have a task to complete, something deep inside awakens. Our minds sharpen, emotions stabilize, and bodies gain that steady energy we crave.

The Health Connection We Often Miss
We tend to separate health into categories:
  • physical health
  • mental health
  • emotional health
  • spiritual health
But purpose ties them all together. When you have a sense of purpose, your mind has direction, your emotions feel steadier, and your body often responds with more energy.

Research shows that those with a purpose live healthier, longer lives. As good stewards of our bodies, we recognize that purpose isn't optional.

What Happens When Purpose Is Missing?
On the other hand, when we lose that sense of purpose, it can show up in subtle but significant ways:
  • fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • lack of motivation
  • feelings of discouragement or restlessness
  • difficulty focusing
This is something many midlife women experience during transitional seasons of life, such as when children start school, seniors graduate from high school, and menopause. It feels like your purpose and “mom” identity are gone, and you’re not sure what you will “dress and keep.”

It’s important to remember our “dress and keep” is for a season; then another season comes with a new garden to dress and keep, and we may use lessons from previous seasons in this garden. Sometimes the Lord may lead us back to school, to dress and keep a new garden he has prepared for us.

Purpose Doesn’t Mean Pressure
Now, this is important. It’s about recognizing what garden God has placed you in right now and engaging with it intentionally. Not volunteering for every sign-up sheet just because you’re capable. You don't want to burn out working in other people's gardens and have little time and energy to give to our own

Understand what purposeful work is NOT about:
  • overloading your schedule
  • striving for perfection
  • trying to “do it all.”
For a homemaker with children, this might look like:
  • preparing nourishing meals
  • creating a peaceful environment
  • nurturing those in your home
For homemakers without others in the home to care for, it may include:
  • a job
  • a volunteer ministry
  • Serving others in ways that reflect your gifts
Just because you can do it doesn’t mean God called you to it; discern what garden God has placed you in and dress and keep it.
"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:30

Practical Steps to Reconnect in Transition
1. Pray through Ecclesiastes 3: List your current "gardens." Ask God to reveal your purpose in each one.
2. Journal About Your Garden: What needs cultivating? Family ties? Personal growth? A quiet hobby reborn?
3. Sharpen Your Tools:  Tend your body's temple so it’s in shape to do the required tasks.
4. Remember to Rest: Rest isn't lazy; it's stewardship (Exodus 20:8-11).
5. Seek Aged Women: Share your transition struggles with another Godly woman who’s been there.

You were not created to drift through life. Like Adam in the Garden of Eden, you're made to cultivate, dress, and keep the gardens God gives: your home, health, job, and ministries.

In that purpose lies strength, clarity, and vibrant energy. As a good steward of your body, step into it. Your health legacy awaits.

Hello, I'm Dana!

If I had known the truth about the toxic carcinogens lurking in the foods, cleaning products, personal care items, and laundry products I was buying, I would have done more to preserve my health! Like most Americans, I had NO CLUE; there were toxins in them that were DESTROYING my body.

Since 2013, when my journey back to wellness began, I have spent loads of money (because insurance doesn't cover WELL care) and hours learning what the root cause of my chronic pain, fatigue, dense brain fog, and lethargy was.

After four years of researching and experimenting with different so-called "natural or green" products, and re-learning how to shop, read labels, cook, and clean, my struggle to find safe, plant-based products was complete. I easily began transforming my home into a safe environment that no longer created health problems. I have now replaced all of my medications with plant-based foods and products that work wonderfully without the side effects!!

Are you struggling to find real relief for your symptoms, too? Do you desire to see the health God designed you to have? Would you enjoy a community of wellness-seeking people to help educate you, share experiences, and offer some great tips?

I'm confident this is what you're searching for, too. Let me invite you to join my educational group, Biblical Health for Christ-Centered Homemakers. Want to chat more about your journey to wellness and how you can help your family, too? Click below to contact me now!
